Pionierskie kroki, przecierające szlaki dla pozostałych szkół wyższych, poczynił Uczelniany Parlament ZSP Politechniki Gdańskiej – najstarsza w Polsce demokracja akademicka. To on dał zwykłym studentom możliwość wpływu na mechanizm, którego pierwotnie mieli być tylko częścią.
W bieżącym roku przypada 55. rocznica jego powstania.
